thoughts on eating food

I cut open a yellow mingling with green and
black grapefruit today
with a serrated knife and thought
of you.  the yellow leather yielded;
showed an asymmetry
that reminded me of you.  the knife was slick,
the heat of the sun made my hands sticky
and remembered yours.  I used a spoon
sized too big to scoop out the pulp from between the cartilaginous
webbing, the sloppy action rupturing corpuscles with
spray finding my eye and
I wondered about you.  The emptied vessel I squeezed
in one hand and held a bowl
 underneath to catch the sap that poured
and thunk it strange that a tree would
grow such a bitter seed inside a sweet fruit
